Delayed, ad-infested telecast of Pacquiao-Barrera bout

As a member of the Pinoy TV audience, I am disgusted by the delayed and commercial-infested telecast by GMA-7 of the Pacquiao-Barrera fight today. The telecast of the actual fight started roughly an hour after Pacquiao was dubbed winner by a unanimous decision. (Ditto for ABS-CBN which covered previous matches.)

There was not even a crawler on GMA-7 when Pacquiao was already pronounced winner. (Ditto for ABS-CBN which covered previous matches.) Good thing, I had broadband internet access and managed to get updates from livebloggers, running accounts and breaking news.

GMA-7 should have put the words ‘RECORDED EARLIER” or “DELAYED TELECAST” in its telecast. Obvious naman kasi na hindi “live”. (Ditto for ABS-CBN which covered previous matches.)

There should also be checks in the number of commercials allowed in this types of special coverages. In the GMA-7 coverage, there was plenty of ads. Sometimes, the time alloted for ads was longer than the time for the boxing match itself. (Ditto for ABS-CBN which covered previous matches.)

By the time ledgers of ad placement payments are computed, we are certain that it was not just Pacquiao who won. GMA-7 and partner Solar Entertainment also scored a windfall at the public’s expense.
