March 29 is one of several red-letter days for Filipino communists and their supporters, as it marks the anniversary of the founding of the New People’s Army.

The Communist Party of the Philippines, which leads the NPA, issued a statement marking the event, and explains why armed revolution remains the most powerful alternative to the festering crisis, and why the “dirty war” waged by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (a war characterized by extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances of legal activists, and human rights abuses) is failing.
