Bien Lumbera’s translation of great plays to be launched Nov. 16 at UP

National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera’s translation into Filipino of plays by Garcia Lorca, Gorky,  Joaquin, and
Shakespeare under the series “Entablado Klasiko” will be launched on Friday, November 16, from 5.30 pm, at the Tanghalang Hermogenes Ylagan, Faculty Center, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

During the launch, the Dulaang UP, under the directorship Prof. Josefina Estrella, will present excerpts from the  plays being featured: “Kasal sa Dugo” (Garcia Lorca’s “Bodas de Sangre”), “Kaaway” (Gorky’s “Enemy”) “Retrato ng Artista bilang Filipino” (Joaquin’s “Portrait of the Artist as Filipino”), and “Julio Cesar” (Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”).

Hailed as classics, the plays in their new incarnation are envisioned to appeal to a wider audience, especially among students and educators in high school and college, and scholars in literature and drama classes as well as translation studies.

The launch is jointly organized by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, UP Department of Filipino and Philippine
Literature, the Filipinas Institute of Translation, and the Dulaang UP.
