House committee assignments of activist partylist representatives

[UPDATED 10:30 AM, Aug. 26) As member of the majority caucus of the House of Representatives, progressive partylist representatives of Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Gabriela, Kabataan and ACT Teachers managed to land a chairmanship, six vice chairpersonships and membership in a number of other committees.  

  1. Teddy Casino (Bayan Muna) – Chair of Small Businesses and Entrepreneurship, Vice Chair of Higher and Technical Education, and Member of: Foreign Affairs, Information and Communications Technology, Natural Resources, Public Information, and Trade and Industry
  2. Rafael Mariano (Anakpawis) – Vice Chair of Agriculture and Food, and Member of: Agrarian Reform, Government Enterprises and Privatization, Government Reorganization, Housing and Urban Development, Human Rights, Labor and Employment, and Rural Development
  3. Luzviminda Ilagan (Gabriela) – Vice Chair of Women and Gender Equality, and Member of: Basic Education and Culture, Constitutional Amendments, Mindanao Affairs, and Overseas Workers Affairs
  4. Neri Javier Colmenares (Bayan Muna) – Vice Chair of Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, and Member of: Constitutional Amendments, Human Rights, Local Government, Natural Resources, and Trade and Industry
  5. Raymond Palatino (Kabataan) – Vice Chair of Youth and Sports Development, and Member of: Basic Education and Culture, Globalization and WTO, Higher and Technical Education, Millenium Development Goals, Social Services
  6. Antonio Tinio (ACT Teachers Partylist) – Vice Chair of Basic Education and Culture, and Member of: Civil Service and Professional Regulation, Economic Affairs, Government Enterprises and Privatization, Millenium Development Goals, Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, and Women and Gender Equality
  7. Emerenciana de Jesus (Gabriela) – Member of: Health, Human Rights, Labor and Employment, Poverty Alleviation, Revision of Laws, Social Services, The Welfare of Children, and Women and Gender Equality

With their vice chairpersonships and memberships in these committees of the Makabayan solons, the electorate and their constituencies should expect them to champion causes and concerns of the marginalized and underrepresented.

The last time an activist legislator headed a House committee was in the 13th Congress when Bayan Muna Representative Satur Ocampo was elected Chair of the House Special Committee on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity.

Ocampo and Liza Maza of Gabriela ended their nine-year, three-term stint this year.
