Justice Azcuna, Edith Burgos to discuss ‘writ of amparo’ tomorrow; BBC interviews Satur on RP rights situation

Supreme Court Associate Justice Adolf Azcuna and Mrs. Edith Burgos will lead a forum on the controversial writ of amparo tomorrow, Oct. 17, Wednesday, 2:00 pm at Bahay Kalinaw, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

Other reactors: Integrated Bar of the Philippines President Atty. Feliciano Bautista, and National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) Secretary-General Atty. Neri Javier Colmenares.

The writ of amparo is the Supreme Court’s response to continuing political slays and abductions of activists.

Mrs. Burgos is the mother of Jonas Burgos, purportedly a victim of enforced disappearance by the military. Burgos is among about 200 victims of enforced disappearances, says human rights watchdog Karapatan. Nearly 900 have been named victims of extrajudicial killings.

The forum is an initiative of NUPL, a recently-formed organization of lawyers for human rights.

House Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo was a recent guest at the BBC studios in London. He spoke on the human rights abuses under the Arroyo government. Here is a YouTube video of that interview:
