Karapatan’s 3Q 2008 monitor of human rights in the Philippines

The human rights alliance Karapatan has issued its monitor for the third quarter of 2008. Brace yourself for some bad news.

As of Sept. 30, Karapatan has listed 933 victims of extrajudicial killings and 199 victims of involuntary disappearances since Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assumed office.

1,707 individuals were arrested or brought to jail for political reasons, according to the report. The Arroyo government also allegedly continues to imprison 275 people. These are known as political prisoners.
