Smart, Globe and Sun battle over mobile broadband internet market

Telcos Smart, Globe and Sun Cellular are locked in a battle royale in the quest to get the most number of Filipinos looking for ways to connect their computers to the internet using mobile broadband solutions.

Industry leader and mobile broadband pioneer Smart lowered its Smart Bro Prepaid USB dongle to P3,800.

No changes in Smart Bro prepaid rates, as of now: Still P10 for 30 minutes.

But Smart may at the moment lose steam after Globe and Sun Cellular announced their new offerings.

Very recently, Globe started offering its Visibility Prepaid USB dongle for just P2,500 which the company correctly touted as the cheapest in the market. Usage rate is P5.00 per 15 minutes.

A Globe Visibility Prepaid USB kit comes with P30.00 free load, with the SIM capable of calling, texting and other standard functions.

Both Smart and Globe have boasted nationwide 3G/HSDPA coverage.

But the surprise is Sun Cellular which has again stole the thunder from Smart and Globe with its unlimited mobile broadband product.

Sun Broadand Wireless is a purely postpaid, no prepaid affair. Customers may choose from three plans: Plan 799 (P799.00 for 60 hours at speeds of 400 kbps), Plan 999 (P999.00 for unlimited usage at speeds of 400 kbps) and Plan 1999 (P1,999 for unlimited usage at speeds of 1.4 mbps).

The downside of the Sun offering is its limited reach: Sun’s HSDPA coverage is now only limited to Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Las Pinas, Paranaque, Pasay and Pasig.

I’m actually taking a close look at the current offers because I plan to get one of them. Let’s see what happens in the next few weeks and wait for customer reviews and feedbacks on these offerings especially in the popular forums and bulletin boards.
