March 8 is International Women’s Day.
Gabriela, the country’s largest and most influential women’s group, said this year’s Women’s Day will banner the theme “Kababaihan, Magkaisa! Labanan ang Pambubusabos, Pangungurakot at Panunupil ng Gobyernong Arroyo!” to echo the call for united women’s actionagainst the “evils” of the Arroyo administration.
Gabriela has set a women’s march on March 8 and the group estimates a turnout of at least 10,000 — and more if you care to join. Men are welcome to attend. Assembly starts at 9:00 am at Welcome Rotonda while the march to Plaza Miranda begins at 10:oo am.
Set to lead the marchers are Bibeth Orteza, former Sen. Leticia Ramos-Shahani, Amina Rasul, UP College of Arts and Letters Dean Rosario Torres Yu, Former UP Dean Connie Paz, lawyers Evalyn Ursua and Claire Padilla, Dr. Sylvia dela Paz, Marietta Goco, and Gabriela Women’s Party Reps. Liza Maza and Luz Ilagan.
The newly-formed women’s network Babae Laban sa Katiwalian or BaBaLa!, spearheaded by Gabriela, will back the mass action. Also joining are contingents from the Concerned Women of Assumption, Concerned Citizens’ Group headed by former DOTC Undersecretary Josie Lichauco, wives of military officers headed by Ms. Pong Querubin, Be Not Afraid, Pwersa ng Kababaihan sa San Juan, MARE, Youth Act Now, Ecumenical Women’s Forum, and the SALINLAHI Alliance for Children’s Concerns.
Rep. Lani Cayetano, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, Sandra Cam and Ms. Sonia Roco are set to speak at the Plaza Miranda rally. Performers include Maita Gomez, Gina Alajar and Armida Siguion Reyna.
After the Plaza Miranda rally, Gabriela will lead a march to historic Mendiola Bridge.
Gabriela also said that women’s marches and demonstrations will also be held in Baguio City, Naga City, Legaspi City, Sorsogon, Bacolod City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, General Santos City, and Davao City on the same day.
In the US, the Mariposa Alliance and Gabriela Network will lead marches and demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles and Washington Square Park in New York City against the US war on terror.
Another group called Gabriela USA will also hold actions backing the calls for Arroyo’s ouster from office.
