[LOL UPDATE, Aug. 18:  HP called me up at home with this message -- The notebook's LCD has been replaced and the notebook is ready for pickup. But I already got it yesterday, right? LOL]

After a long 27-day wait, the HP Service Center in Makati City called me up this afternoon with good news I have long waited to hear: My notebook is ready for delivery and its busted LCD screen replaced. I told HP to ditch the delivery because I will instead pick it up this same afternoon, which I did and which made typing this post possible.

The call came just two days after I fired off one long and angry email to an official of the HP Service Center and to HP public relations officers. I wanted to email the HP big bosses in the Philippines but I was not able to get their email addresses.

Here’s the email I sent:

Dear Mr. Lavado:

I am writing to complain as an HP/Compaq customer who availed of
warranty repair services at your Makati City office. I am extremely
frustrated and disappointed by your “service” and the “lemon” of a
notebook you are selling.

Allow me to explain:

1. On July 21, I availed of your service center’s Quick Drop service,
leaving my Compaq Presario CQ40-310AU notebook for possible LCD
replacement. Lines have appeared on the LCD of the notebook, making
about half an inch of the bottom part of LCD not viewable and
therefore difficult to use. (Please note that I only bought this
notebook a few months back, believing that HP/Compaq notebooks are a
good quality buy.)

2. Contrary to the promise of the attendant who accepted my notebook
that the center will call me the next day to provide me the tracking
number, I only received a call about it days later.

3. Between that date and Aug. 3, I religiously and almost daily made
calls to your center to check the status of the repair. My expectation
was that the LCD was available and would readily be installed and
tested. Please note that you center did not give any information that
no LCD is actually available to satisfy my request for LCD
replacement.

4. On Aug. 3, at around 5:00 pm, I received a call from 7511912
informing me that a new LCD will be arriving the next day (Aug. 4).
That was the first time I was informed about the absence of a
replacement LCD.

5. On Aug. 10, expecting that the LCD has arrived as per the Aug. 3
advice, I again called up your service center to inquire about my
notebook’s status only to be shocked by the new information that no
LCD has in fact arrived.

6. On Aug. 11 or 12, I again called your service center. The attendant
told me that I should have known the status because someone from HP
allegedly called me the previous date for an update. I informed the
attendant that I received no such call. Had that been the case, I
would not have called to ask for an update.

7. Just a few minutes ago today, Aug. 14, I received a call from
7511912 informing me that “due to a regional shortage of parts”,
including replacement LCDs, HP Philippines’ service center expects
shipments to arrive by the last week of September or the first week of
October. The caller told me that I can opt to temporarily pull out my
notebook and would just be informed when replacement LCDs have
arrived.

While I understand that my notebook is not the only one that needs
your service and attention (your center was full of customers seeking
repairs of their units when I visited last July 21), I wish to point
out that this is no way to treat me or any other customer for that
matter. Your company must respect the most basic consumer right — the
right to adequate and correct information — especially when you deal
with them and when they inquire on the status of the equipment we want
to have repaired or replaced, all under the warranty contracts your
company provided.

To tell you the truth, I am actually prepared to wait for a
considerable time for your center to make repairs. But what irks me is
the center’s seeming cavalier attitude towards my requests for
information. Had I been informed as early as July 22 that no such LCD
replacement is available, I would have opted to pull out my notebook
and waited for an advice when such parts arrive from your regional
center. But no, your center sat on my request for repair, deprived me
of the correct information so I can make such a decision. Worse, there
were obvious attempts to embellish the truth.

In other societies, computer makers provide customers with service
units as a matter of courtesy and respect. That, sadly, is not done
here, as your attendant told me some days back. At the very least, HP
should immediately act on requests for repairs and if delays are
expected, HP should most respectfully inform affected customers.

Where this “regional shortage” leaves me and others whose notebook
LCDs also need replacement, I do not know. We just have to wait as
late as October!? We just have to pray the shortage ends!? We now have
to quietly suffer the inconvenience and humiliation of having bought
lemons!?

Reading through one of the forums at TipidPC.com,
it is apparent that there is a growing number of CQ40-310AU notebooks
with busted, faulty LCDs. There is also a mention of replaced LCDs
experiencing the same problems.

If your LCD replacements are non-existent due to a regional shortage
which seems to be indefinite (no specific date of replacements can be
provided) and if previous LCD replacements cannot themselves last (as
shared by other users), your company owes me and other customers
replacement of the “lemon” units you sold us.

Thanks to this email, magic happened! HP found a replacement LCD, had it installed to my notebook and I got the call today.

    I was just wondering if the LCD problem of the Compaq Presario CQ40 is exclusive w/ the 310AU series. I own a CQ40-108TU for more than a year now and it works perfectly well. I bought my CQ40 in October 2008, as I have read most of the complaints are bought in 2009.

Good news guys… ang bilis mag repair ngaun ng HP ,.. dinala ko ung Laptop ko just last december 4… then sabi nila 1week isolation daw… then nung dec. 11 saktong 1 week.. tumawag ako .. ang sabi ok na daw… tinitesting na lang ung laptop kung meron pang ibang problem maliban sa lcd…. then kahapon … tumawag sya .. ok na daw. ayun pede ng kunin.. ngaun kakauwi ko lng… ang bilis .. d gaya dati inaabot ng 1 month.. btw. sa hp service center ako sa makati pumunta… kaya ung mga me problem dyan na LCd sa presario cq40.. dalin nyo na agad ngaun… para mapabilis ung paggawa…..thx..

  6. I had the same problem with my CQ40. I bought it last May 2009 and the problem started at August. Since I’m far from areas where service centers are located, I was able to bring my unit only last December 13 and surprisingly, got it back yesterday. Well, at least, andito na sakin before the year ended. Mabilis na nga yun coz I was told before by the attendant that I’ll have it back by mid January because of the holidays. Within two weeks andito na ulit. I just hope di na bumalik yung dating problem ng LCD.

  7. ganun din problema ko may 2009 na purchase HP Compaq CQ40-340TU. Ganun din ang problema. Kaso di ko na mahanap ang resibo.

    Mas maganda siguro kung sabay sabay tayo lahat magpunta sa DTI at dalahin natin ang mga units natin na defectve para mag file ng complaint vs HP/Compaq. Para mapalitan ng ibang mas ok na unit/model ang mga sirang units natin. Yan siguro ang pinakamaganda. Kung paisa isa complaint lang kasi wala mangyayari. Kung group baka mas pakinggan tayo.

    If the owner of this blog can get all the email addresses of the all the comlainants here tapos magkaisa/magkasundo sa pagpunta sa DTI kung kailan at ano oras.

  8. Same problem i encountered with my CQ40. Also bought it last May and experienced the flickering lines at the bottom of my LCD about October 2009. Since I am abroad, I could not send my unit to the service center of the vendor in the Philippines where I bought my laptop. Until now, the flickering is still happening and week by week the line at the bottom of the LCD keeps on ‘growing’. I have to put my taskbar at the left hand side just to see it. Sigh…

  9. Kailangan na nga yata nating magsama-sama at magtipon-tipon bago maging palso ang warranties ng laptops natin.

    Sa mga sira ang laptop (yung may mga linya na ang LCD), dalhin niyo na agad sa HP Service Centers para ma-take note ang problema.

  12. No dapat tayo lahat punta sa DTI para file a complaint para mareplace yung mga units natin ng maayos. Kasi sayang lang, kahit palitan nila yung lcd ngayun pero marami na ako nabasa na same problem ay bumabalik after a while din.

    Yung owner ng thread na ito pls make the initiative to gather all the emails ng mga nag post dito na may same problem then email us please para mapag usapan kung kailan at ano time tayo magpunta sa DTI. Mas ok yun di ba? Maraming salamat.

  17. i got my CQ40-310au March 2009 and got broken with the same lcd problem by May 2009. Brought it to HP Makati and got it back 3 weeks after. Now sira parin sha. I’m planning to bring it back again to HP next week. sigh.

  18. I have the same problem but mine is a CQ40-340tu model. I brought it to HP last monday, January 18 and now kakatawag lang nila that I can already pickup my laptop today or on monday. It looks like it is really a defect of the CQ40 series.

  20. i just had the same problem, i brought my notebook last jan. 14 for lcd replacing and got it back yesterday, i fear that the same problem might occur when my warranty comes to its expiry date… i asked one of the employee and told me that i should pay for that if it ever happens,, that’s the real B***S***… not that willing to waste 15k for a busted lcd that’s not really my fault!!! hp….. what are you ganna do??!! just got my notebook sold today:) hopefully and will never buy hp notebook ever again!!

Hi guys, I have the same problem as yours, I bought the laptop last sept. 2009 then the flicker appears this january. dnala ko na sa service center and 3 weeks daw bago makuha. parang sobrang dame nagpapareplace ngaun. go ako sa balak nio pmunta sa dti if ever. nakakainis kc khit mismong service center eh aminado sa problema sa laptop na to. sayang nmn ang oras at pera nten dhil sa defective products ng HP.

  27. Same thing happened to my laptop. I’m so upset for having this kind of trouble with my laptop because I’m using if as my main communication with my husband abroad. That’s really frustrating.   28. im in the US now. binili ko yung saken nung june of last year. bago pa kami umalis ng misis ko may 2mm na red line sa baba. ngayon more than half the task bar covered na. yung warranty ko dyan lang pede. dun sa napalitan na ang lcd please share nyo naman kung umulit yung problem. kase kung uulit din di ko na pagawa dito. $150.00 dollars ang singil kase. maraming salamat.

Imagine, in a matter of 3 days ok na laptop ko.   34. Haha. Kagay ninyong lahat, ganyan din ang problema ko. Kala ko nung una dahil sakin un kasi mahilig ako maglaro dito. Pero ang sabi naman kasi nung nagbebenta, specialized daw tong unti na bibilin ko kaya eto mas bagay sakin. Eun, binili ko naman. Tsaka iniingatan kong wag uminit ng matagal. Ang napansin ko lang, madali syang maginit kaya tinatapatan ko sya ng electric fan. (SOSYAL NA LAPTOP) Buwan din nung nagsimulang lumitaw ung lines sa baba pero indi naman lumaki. Ganon parin ung size. Mga 1 cm lang. Habang napapansin ko ung flickers, kasi parang tataas pa sya, naghohope nlng ako na wag na tumaas or kung mas maganda, mawala na lang. Pero di gaya nung iba, lumala pa ung sira at whole LCD screen na ung natakpan. Di ko na inabot yun. T_T kagabi lang, naglalaro ako ng biglang mag white ung screen. nawawala wala sya. 2 times un hanggang sa nagging gray nalang ang screen everytime na i-try kong buksan. T_T LCD lang talaga ung problem kasi based dun sa mga sounds, nagrurun sya ng matino. may password kasi ung akin kaya kahit gray ung screen at wala akong makita kundi yon, tinype ko ung password at tenen! accepted ung password pero ung screen gray parin. Pero alam ko na nasa desktop na sya. HAHAHA.

  35. hi, same thing happened to my CQ40-339TU,may dad bought this in singapore as a gift for me, i think that was march or april 2009. i started having problem with my laptop 2 months ago,there is still flickering line at the bottom of my cq40, MY PROBLEM IS THAT SINCE THIS IS JUST A GIFT FROM MY DAD I DON’T HAVE THE RECEIPT OF THIS AND MY DAD ALREADY LOST THE RECEIPT.I’VE READ THE WARRANTY OF MY CQ40 IT SAY’S INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY. WILL MY LAPTOP BE ALSO ACCEPTED AND REPLACED THE LCD EVEN IF I DON’T HAVE THE RECEIPT AND EVEN IF IT IS BOUGHT IN SINGAPORE? COULD SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER ME? I REALLY NEED HELP ON THIS.

So far it’s working. also been playing some games but always on lower graphics. wala pa ring problema. but i do agree that HP’s customer service is quite slow. i had an ipaq before and it took them 8 months (yes MONTHS) to get it back to me and all it needed was a new battery replacement. then again, that was in 2004. medyo matagal na haha!

  39. Good thing mas ok ang service center d2 sa Naga City, Camarines Sur…. “Bitstop computers”… pareho din ng mga problema nyo ang nangyari d2 sa Compaq CQ40 ko…. Mabilis lang nagawa at hindi nila kailangan paiwan sa kanila unit… after 3 days ng pagapply ko for repairs sila mismo nagtxt sakin na dumating na yung LCD na ipapalit… Sa may mga problema din sa parehong unit d2 sa Bicol, try nyo sa rin sa Bitstop Computers, J Hernandez Ave, Naga City…

  41. Sir, i’m currently working sa service center nila. Most of the issues is about the LCD. Ung time frame ng pag ayos dapat 3-5 days lang. Ganito po nangyayari sa area namin, enduser will go to the reseller para ireklamo ung unit n binili, ipapaiwan then may schedule po para pick-up ng mga units goin to the service center. tapos assign sa service engineer, isolate the unit then request for the part. Tapos pag dumating, aayusin na then release the unit.

Hi guys, ganyan din case ng CQ40 ko, i bought it last sept 2009 sa moa accent micro, dis march lang lumabas ung line sa ibaba, plan ko dalhin sa service center nila sa makati, i hope magawa agad, dun sa nagpost na sana i-recall ng hp unit na deffective eh agree ako if pupunta sa dti join ako.   48. It seems that I’m not the only person experiencing the same problem with this unit. But my main concern right now is I bought my unit January 2009, so its basically out of warranty now. Already heard some few complaints from some people about this model but since I’ve never had a problem with mine, I didn’t mind that much. But just a weeks ago, it started to flicker and as the day goes, it only get worse. Now everytime I open my laptop, all I see is just half of the screen with streaks across in it. If I only knew that this will happen, I just wish I’ve disposed my unit and opt to buy a new one (definitely NOT COMPAQ). Please help if HP also accommodates out-of-warranty defective units? I agree that HP should consider a recall, since the problem is evidently existing and not just isolated cases.
