NUJP to hold ‘right to reply’ forum

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines is inviting media professionals to a forum on Dec. 8, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at the UP College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman. Topic will be the bills on the “right to reply” bill passed by the Senate on third reading.

The NUJP says that, if passed, the measure will “intrude into the media’s editorial prerogative by dictating content”.

In a letter-invitation, NUJP secretary-general Sonny Fernandez said that “lawmakers and law enforcement agencies have chosen to forge ahead with the passage and implementation of the right of reply bills both in the upper and lower houses. The said bills tend to muzzle press freedom and free expression without deigning to consult the media community. It is clear that more work and, equally important, greater unity and resolve are needed to address these urgent problems”.

The forum will be part of the NUJP’s observance of the international day of human rights.
